This article offers actionable self-care strategies tailored specifically for busy people, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing well-being amidst a hectic schedule. It provides practical tips, time-saving hacks, and customizable routines to fit even the busiest lifestyles.

Introduction:

Life be life-ing. Every moment seems to blur into the next. Let me go back. Life be life-ing, yes. But adulting? Adulting has us in a chokehold. As we move on from one thing to the next to the next, and then the next, there's a silent yet insistent voice begging us to slow down, to pause, to breathe. But are you heeding the whisper or ignoring the sh*t out of it? I totally get it though. In a world that glorifies hustle culture and applauds busy-ness, the idea of prioritizing our own well-being can feel like the wrong answer; a luxury we can't afford.

I can picture Alex Trebek giving the answer: “The thing we should cherish above all else.” And one player buzzing in with “What is: our well-being?” WRONG! The next player chimes in “What is: our productivity?” Ding ding ding! $800 for you. Ugh.

I invite you to consider a different perspective. Imagine feeling okay with, amidst the chaos and clamor daily life, finding moments of calm, pockets of peace, and just the bit of stillness you need to experience to come back into alignment with your entire being. Could you possibly consider self-care as not just a fleeting indulgence, but a real and tangible need that must be met in order to nourish our minds, bodies, and souls?

Like you, I've navigated my fair share of twists and turns doing this whole life thing. And in the midst of my worst moments I realized my salvation was in taking better care of myself. It was 2020 and I was trying to give my all to care for my toddler while on lockdown in a tiny apartment and also while trying to figure out how to move my healing work completely online to maintain an income. Whew! I started to get easily angered as my fuse grew shorter and shorter. I realized that this was something I couldn’t push through but something I had to nurture myself through if I was going to survive in one piece. Self love and self compassion had to be activated like a superhero forreal. I had discovered the profound truth that self-care isn't a luxury reserved for the privileged few, but a fundamental component of well-being.

Now, why don’t we uncover the secrets of self-care that can anchor even the busiest go getting high performer amongst us. We’ll explore practical strategies and insights that can empower us to thrive in turbulent times.

But first, take the poll and see where the community is on their self-care game.

Understanding Self-Care in a Busy Lifestyle

Life is short, they say. So what do we tend to do with it? Relentlessly pursue success and achievement. We want to leave a big, lasting legacy like the white men who’s statues decorate every major city. We often tell ourselves “If they could do it, I can do it.” Of course skipping out on all the violence, death and destruction that came with those men’s versions of success. We blindly overlook the possible legacy of simply being the bright, bold, beautiful humans that we each are. We overlook the real power therein. What’s more, we relegate self care to the realm of indulgence or simply an afterthought. The thing is that caring for your whole self is the biggest achievement, the biggest act of love you can commit to doing. And it’s not about pampering oneself with bubble baths and spa days, not entirely at least. It's a potent tool for enhancing productivity, fostering creativity and presence, and nurturing resilience.

And the biggest misconception about this deep and loving form of self-care is that, indeed, it is all about the individual. In reality, it is, and it isn’t. At all. Its about the existence of communities of individuals who have a strong foundation of well-being. When we build our communities from this foundation, we have a better chance of creating meaningful connections and a brighter future. Right now, we are communities of large amounts of unwell people and those unwell people are our leaders and are creating our futures. Where does that lead?

You need you to be well, and we need you to be well. You're a high-performing individual with a heart-led approach to life. You pour your heart and soul into your work, striving to make a meaningful impact in the world. We need more of that, more of you. But the bottom line is that no matter how busy we are surviving or pursuing goals, it doesn’t mean much for our future if we are unwell while we do it.  With that whirlwind of deadlines, meetings, and obligations driving you beyond burnout, your well-being hangs precariously in the balance.

It's a scenario that's all too familiar for many of us, myself included. As someone who wears too many hats to be listed here, I've experienced firsthand the toll that neglecting self-care can take on our physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

And that’s why the self-care mythbusting is so crucial. I can’t say it enough: self-care isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. To put it in the cheesiest yet most easy-to-remember terms: we must put on our oxygen mask before we can assist others. Caring for ourselves anchors us and keeps us grounded when we experience the downward spiral of life's storms. And it's the gentle reminder that our worth isn't measured by our productivity, but by the depth of our self-love and compassion and when we make connections from this place our sense of wellness spreads and grows.

So, let's redefine self-care, shall we? Let's strip away the stereotypes and misconceptions, and uncover the truth that lies at its core. Self-care isn't selfish; it's self-preservation. It's not indulgent; it's essential. And it's not reserved for the few; it's accessible to all.

Now let’s go deeper into the art and science of self-care, exploring practical strategies and transformative insights that can empower us to prioritize our well-being in the frenetic hustle of our busy lives.

Prioritizing Self-Care with a Hectic Schedule

“Getting sh*t done” is the underlying current that powers our culture. That makes time one of our most precious commodities. We're constantly juggling competing priorities, racing against the clock to meet deadlines, and struggling to keep up with the relentless pace of our schedules. With all this happening on a daily basis without pause, self-care can often feel like an afterthought, a luxury we simply can't afford.

I hate to be the one to say it, but self-care isn't just about finding time;
it's about making time? As a wellness coach I've seen firsthand the transformative power of prioritizing self-care even while doing #allthethings. And unfortunately, I more often than not see potential clients choosing to stay on the hamster wheel, afraid of what might surface if they do indeed slow down and care for themselves more.

Let's consider a common scenario: You might be a person who gives your all to your work, your passions, and your relationships. If this is you, my guess is that your giving to those areas is often at the expense of your own well-being. Am I right? If so, you're not alone.

But here's the thing: self-care isn't selfish; it's self-preservation. And its self connection. A daily spiral into busy-ness without caring for and connecting to yourself keeps you dissociated and more like a soul flying aimlessly in the wind instead of an anchored human who is taking actions that aligns with their values and who they are at a soul level.

Being this anchored, connected person is easier to become than you think. It all starts with carving out small pockets of time each day for activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul.

So, how can you prioritize self-care with all that you have going on? It starts with a shift in mindset. Instead of viewing self-care as a luxury reserved for special occasions, re-frame it as an essential component of your daily routine. Whether it's a five-minute meditation session in the morning, a brisk walk during your lunch break, or a relaxing bath in the evening, identify moments throughout the day during which you can prioritize your well-being.

I know what you're thinking: "I don't have time for self-care." Trust me, I've been there. Phew! But here's the truth: you don't need oodles of free time to practice self-care. In fact, some of the most effective self-care practices can be done in just a few minutes.

In the next section, we'll explore 5 practical strategies for integrating self-care into your busy lifestyle, from time management techniques to setting boundaries and learning to say no. So, clear a space in your calendar to get started on your self-care journey, you busy go-getter, you!

5 Practical Self-Care Tips for Busy Individuals

With the pressure of perfection bearing heavy on our shoulders, social media can make us think we’re doing it all wrong and self-care is actually only for those who can afford a luxury loft and create magazine-worthy depictions of their self-care practice. The term self-care is also often conflated with skincare. Our skin is the largest organ of the body and is worthy of the best care, but so is the rest of us and skincare alone is naaaaht self-care. Sorry. The truth is, self-care doesn't have to be time-consuming or expensive or relegated to hyperfocusing on one part of our body. In fact, some of the most effective self-care practices are simple, accessible, and can be integrated seamlessly into even the busiest of schedules.

So grab a pen and paper and let's explore some practical self-care tips tailored specifically for busy individuals like yourself as I provide real-life examples to help you incorporate them into your busy lifestyle.

  1. Micro-Moments of Mindfulness: In a world that's constantly pulling us in a million different directions, finding moments of stillness can feel like a rare luxury. But the truth is, mindfulness doesn't have to be a lengthy meditation session or a silent retreat in the woods. It can be as simple as taking a few deep breaths, closing your eyes, and tuning into the present moment, no matter where you are or what you're doing.

    What to do?
One simple yet powerful practice is the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique: take a moment to notice five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. This simple exercise can help shift your focus away from stress and anxiety and bring you back to the here and now.

  2. Movement Breaks: When you're knee-deep in work and feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders, the last thing you may want to do is exercise. But here's the secret: movement is medicine for the body and soul. Better yet, make it outdoors so you can get your vitamin D in too.

    What to do?
Whether it's a quick walk around the block, a few minutes of stretching at your desk, or a dance party in your living room, finding ways to incorporate movement into your day can help boost your mood, increase your energy levels, and improve your focus. Try setting a timer to remind yourself to take regular movement breaks throughout the day, and notice how it affects your productivity and overall sense of well-being.

  3. Tech-Free Time: In our hyper-connected world, it's all too easy to fall into the trap of constantly checking our phones, refreshing our email inbox, and scrolling through social media feeds. But too much screen time can leave us feeling drained, anxious, and disconnected from ourselves and others. That's why it's crucial to carve out tech-free time in your day, whether it's during meals, before bed, or first thing in the morning. Use this time to disconnect from technology and reconnect with yourself, your loved ones, and the world around you.

    What to do?
Start by setting boundaries around your device usage, such as designating certain times of day as "tech-free zones" or turning off notifications during meals and before bed. Use this time to engage in activities that nourish your soul, whether it's reading a book, going for a walk in nature, or simply enjoying a quiet moment of reflection.

  4. Nourishing Nutrition: They say you are what you eat, and when you're fueling your body with nutrient-rich foods, you'll feel like a million bucks. But I get it – when you're busy, it's tempting to reach for convenience foods that are quick and easy to grab on the go. But making small tweaks to your diet – like adding more fruits and veggies, staying hydrated, and minimizing processed foods – can have a big impact on your energy levels, mood, and overall well-being.

    What to do?
If there’s anything I learned from the French is that it’s actually quite easy to eat healthy and enjoy your food. The key is keeping it simple and realistic. Start by incorporating 1 fresh, cooked or preserved fruit or vegetable into meal and snack times. It could be a couple slices of apple, cut up carrots, pineapple, mango, raisins, the sky’s the limit! Over time you can add in more whole grains, and lean proteins, and aim to drink water more than sugary drinks throughout the day to stay hydrated. Meal prep can also be a game-changer for some but filling the stocks with healthy options (fresh and preserved) makes it easy to continue to eat well when you don’t have time to prepare meals in advance.

  5. Boundaries and Saying No: One of the biggest challenges of self-care is learning to set boundaries and say no to things that drain your energy and deplete your reserves. It's okay to prioritize your own well-being and decline invitations, delegate tasks, or renegotiate deadlines when needed. Remember, saying no isn't selfish – it's self-preservation.

    What to do?
Practice saying no with grace and kindness, and remember that prioritizing your own well-being is not selfish – it's essential for your health and happiness. Start by identifying your core values and priorities, and use them as a guide when making decisions about how to spend your time and energy.

By incorporating these practical self-care tips into your busy lifestyle, you'll not only feel happier and healthier, but you'll also be better equipped to handle whatever life throws your way.
